The Jones Day team impressed the judges in M&A Team of the Year category, which was sponsored by Intralinks, for its work on a complex and long-running deal to sell a European conglomerate comprising a number of household brands and listed companies.
The judges described the transaction as “hideously complicated” and noted that the team had to overcome “huge obstacles” to close the deal.
The transaction involved the liquidation of a substantial private equity fund, a group reorganisation of multiple operating companies including a merger of two listed entities, restructuring the group’s substantial bank debts, international civil and criminal litigation, significant political risks and the ultimate successful sale of all of the operating companies in the group at the highest price ever offered for the assets.
Jones Day’s M&A team was led by corporate partner Julian Runnicles. It worked closely with the firm’s global disputes practice and its contentious insolvency practice, led by litigation partner Barnaby Stueck and insolvency partner Kay Morley respectively.
They were supported by Jones Day lawyers across multiple European offices.
An impressed client said: “This was truly one of the most technically and strategically complex deals we have ever seen and Jones Day’s legal and commercial acumen was outstanding. This would not have happened without them. A truly stunning achievement against the odds.”
